Power up your People with Human Energy

How energised is your team right at this moment?
Are they bursting into the office each day ready to give their all? Or is their energy depleted?
Senior VP of Retail at Apple Inc, Angela Ahrendts gives a remarkable Ted Talk on Human Energy  and how it, “singlehandedly has the power to unite and transform companies and communities”.
During Ahrendts’ time as CEO of Burberry she credits channelling positive human energy as keeping Burberry ahead of the game and achieving goals 8 months ahead of schedule.
When your people are energised they can confidently and competently deal with day to day stresses. They can focus their attention, make calculated decisions, react to matters as they arise in a clearer state of mind and be innovative.

Five Energy Blasting Levers:
  • Corporate Values. Yes, that old chestnut. You may share the same definition of Corporate Values as Jargon Madness; “This expression is so suffused with phoniness it churns the stomach. Corporations don’t have values, the people who run them do”.
If that is you – put some energy into your Values. They shouldn’t just be a poster stuck on the wall. They should form the heart of your Culture and draw your business purpose into a tangible conglomerate for your people to grab hold of and identify with.
  • Inspire your people by leading by example. Australia’s former Chief of Army, David Morrison rightly states; “the Standard you walk past is the standard you accept”. Act with integrity, be courageous and be an inspiring leader for your business. Don’t walk past unacceptable practises, address things that are wrong.
  • Empower your people to make decisions and own their work without micro-managing. Autonomy is a people motivator and an energiser.
  • Recognise good work. Studies conducted show that Statistics state that recognition in front of peers can have a longer lasting motivational impact then monetary incentives. Obviously, everyone has different motivators but don’t fall into the trap of thinking everyone is only in the game for the money. Gratitude and acknowledgement of a job well done is a sure fire way to energise your business.
  • Provide a supportive environment where the heavy lifting is shared. If people need an ear or a hand make sure it is clear that it is available. Where you can do all that you are able to remove the “blockers” that rapidly deplete energy.
How are you energising your team? If you are not then get zapping. It will lead to great results.
